About Micheal Mihos
At 33 years of age, Michael Mihos was dubbed the building doctor. For most that would be a lofty ideal to maintain, but by 1988, just six years after he had received his California Contractors License and opened his own company, Mihos was described by the San Diego Tribune as “what La Costa plastic surgeons are to wrinkled faces.” Mihos was actively involved in the 80s transformation of the Gaslamp Quarter from sleazy eyesore to urban success story. His early renovations (including the Lawyers Block, Marston – Hubble Buildings, Horton Grand Hotel, Luellen storefront, Golden Lion Tavern and Jessop Building) created a catalyst for others to continue in the Gaslamp’s restoration. Since then, Michael Mihos has focused his life’s work on bettering the San Diego community through historic restorations, urban development, tenant improvements and new construction.
Born into an Orange County construction family, Mihos started in the industry as a laborer and progressed to become a 14-year journeyman. Although Mihos benefitted from his family’s tutoring and his successful completion of numerous commercial and residential projects, his aspirations to be a forest ranger took him down another path. But, fate stepped in and Mihos realized the positive impact that the building industry — especially, historic restoration — could have on a community. Since opening Michael Mihos Construction in 1982, he has worked tirelessly as a champion of historic renovation and urban development in San Diego, with special focus on the Gaslamp Quarter.
Mihos considers his greatest skill to be informing building owners, at the beginning of a project, how much a renovation will cost. Using an extensive database developed from previous project costs and activities, Mihos can accurately forecast prices, potential problems and timelines.
Mihos’ broad working knowledge of his trade, pride of workmanship and adherence to fair bidding and business practices has placed Michael Mihos Construction as a leader among San Diego’s highly-competitive general contractors.
